Simran Vedvyas, the youngest torchbearer from UAE, gracefully carried the Olympic Flame during the London 2012 Olympic Games at Hinderwell United Kingdom, on 18th June 2012

I am honored as the youngest torchbearer chosen from the Gulf region by Samsung Gulf Electronics, to carry the esteemed Olympic Flame during the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer as it journeys across the UK.  I am one of the only six chosen from UAE.

I carried the flame this morning 18th June 2012 at 9.01 AM- Hinderwell, United Kingdom.  I felt that it was not only, my moment to shine as I could inspire millions of people watching me in my community- India and country- United Arab Emirates, in the United Kingdom and worldwide but also a very proud moment for GEMS and The Millennium School.  Nominated and sponsored by Samsung Gulf Electronics as social campaigner and a ‘star’ student of the school, I aspire to represent Peace, Unity and Friendship.

For me, I share that becoming a torch bearer is a sensational and super exciting experience which I have enjoyed since past few months and continue to do so. This is one of the instances when I realized that WE the people can make a difference to simplify the life of others.  Samsung has shown their appreciation to us by this remarkable gift and who would do it otherwise because as a conglomerate they themselves are also engaged with many initiatives worldwide with focused aims to reach out and impact the society.

As a person who walks an extra mile, I successfully collected over 1500 pairs of shoes in less than a month for the impoverished patients suffering from Diabetes in Africa and Middle East, in 2010-2011 through my campaign “Connect for Diabetes-Share Your Shoes”. I coordinated to pack, send and distribute these through US- aided AMPATH Centre in Eldoret Kenya, Africa in November 2010 with the help of Abbott Diabetes Care.  I made a personal visit to Kenya to meet the officials in December 2010 during my school vacation too.  The collection kept adding so in July 2011, I dispatched another similar lot of shoes to Uganda.  I was awarded with ‘The Principal’s Citizenship Award’ and ‘Abbott International’s Ambassador’s Award’ in 2011.  The drive continued and on the 40th National Day of United Arab Emirates – “Together for Diabetes Walkathon- Raise your hands for Africa” was organized with aim to wear a wrist band and walk 3 kilometers to create awareness for the cause – Diabetes.  Abbott International committed to print Diabetes Monitoring Diaries for the suffering and needy patients in Africa; equivalent to the number of people who participate in the walk.  I was chosen as the Student Ambassador for the event and beyond.  I promoted and worked passionately for the cause. As said by His Excellency Nelson Mandela, “After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb”.

I am appointed as Eye on Earth Youth Ambassador, a UNEP supported AGEDI and Environment Agency Abu Dhabi initiative, UNEP -TUNZA Eco Generation Regional Ambassador Middle East, Earth Charter Youth Group Country Activator- UAE, Ambassador Connect for Diabetes- Raise your Hands for Africa and Middle East, Spokesperson and Ambassador Cosmo Foundation (an NGO with Education Initiative) India and UAE.

I traveled to the United Kingdom within a day of my return from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this June where I proudly stood up on the United Nation’s Environment Program (UNEP) Eye on Earth stage and made an impressive speech focusing on the need to rekindle the imagination of youth and the need to act now and deliver the vision for a better sustainable future.  As Eye on Earth Youth Ambassador, I promoted the initiative of Eye on Environmental Education amongst over 3000 youth from around 120 countries who attended the Youth Blast – UN CSD Conference at Rio and millions others who followed the proceedings from their place.  My message to the world was strong and is viewed by many to like.  As TUNZA Eco Generation Regional Ambassador Middle East I promote presentation and project on how Youth can Promote Rio + 20 and Beyond, like wise justified by following the Earth Charter principles herself and encouraging others to follow too.

Before concluding I wish to say that undoubtedly, the team of Samsung and London Olympics Games Organizing Committee have worked tirelessly for months together to make this event a success and so memorable for all the torch bearers and they have been a wonderful host too.  This has been truly a –MOMENT TO SHINE and something that I will cherish throughout my lifetime.
